Terms of Use

Last updated: 24 October 2026

These terms are an agreement between you and Chinese Genealogy ("the site") about using the site. By registering an account, or by using the site without one, you agree to them. How personal information is handled is set out in the Privacy Policy.

1. What the site is

The site lets families compile, keep and read their genealogies together online. Each genealogy is run by the person who created it (its owner) and the genealogy administrators the owner appoints, and is written up by members of the family. The service is free.

2. Accounts

  1. Registering needs an email address at which you yourself receive mail. The account works once you follow the link in the confirmation message.
  2. One account per person. Keep your password safe: what is done with your account is taken to be done by you.
  3. An account may create up to 3 genealogies; a system administrator can change this for an individual account.
  4. Your display name appears in the record of changes you submit, where genealogy administrators see it. Do not use someone else's name.

3. Genealogies and what is in them

  1. A genealogy's contents are entered by members of the family; the site does not verify them. Whoever enters something is responsible for it being true and lawful.
  2. Genealogies record living people. Enter only what you have good reason to record. When a living person asks for what is recorded about them to be corrected or removed, the genealogy's administrators should do so, and the site will help.
  3. By default the site does not show the public anyone's name or other details from a genealogy - only their generation, sex and number of children - and people's pages are not open to the public. A genealogy's administrators can choose to show the names of its earlier generations, but the recent generations (people with fewer than four generations recorded below them) are never shown to the public, and a genealogy's administrators cannot change this. Genealogy administrators, approved linked members and anyone who has entered the genealogy's access code can see everything. Only those who may edit can download the PDF or the lineage chart.
  4. The owner can make a genealogy public, unlisted or private. A public genealogy is listed in the directory only after a system administrator has approved it.
  5. A genealogy's contents belong to the family that entered them. By entering content you allow the site to store, show, search and export it (as a PDF or a lineage chart) in order to provide the service, within the genealogy's visibility settings. The site does not sell genealogies' contents or use them for advertising.
  6. The owner can delete a genealogy. For 90 days afterwards a system administrator can restore it; after that it is permanently deleted, together with the files made from it.

4. What you may not do

You may not use the site to:

  • enter content that is unlawful, infringing, defamatory, obscene or inflammatory;
  • impersonate anyone, or publish someone's contact details or other private information without their consent;
  • register in bulk by program, guess passwords or access codes, or harvest content that is not shown to you;
  • interfere with the site's working, including by submitting large numbers of exports.

The site limits how often sign-in, registration, access codes and exports may be tried.

5. What the site may do

Where these terms are broken, the site may remove the content concerned, suspend the genealogy concerned, or suspend the account. Suspending a genealogy does not delete its contents.

6. Responsibility

The site is provided as it is. It tries, but does not promise, to run without interruption or error. Genealogies' contents are entered by users, and the site is not responsible for their accuracy. Keep your own copy of anything important, such as an exported PDF. As far as the law allows, the site is not liable for indirect loss arising from its use.

7. Changes to these terms

Any change to these terms will be published on this page with a new date; important changes will be announced on the site. Continuing to use the site after a change means accepting the changed terms.

8. Contact

To contact the site, write through Contact us.
