Your family's genealogy, online, made together
Nothing to install and no typesetting to learn. Make an account, give the ancestral place and surname, enter the founder - and in minutes your family has its genealogy.
Creating a genealogy is completely free, and whoever creates it becomes its administrator. Once it is made, you and your family can add to it and correct it bit by bit. Start your family's genealogy online now. A family compiling its genealogy can also add its members' names easily online, and use the site's PDF typesetting to download a file to print and bind as a book.
Ready in minutes
A wizard asks one thing at a time: the place down to the county, the surname, the founder. That is the genealogy made, with its own web address.
The whole family helps
Post the family code in your family's group chat: relatives who enter it can add newborns, fill in details and correct mistakes, and each change waits for your approval.
Read anywhere, print as a book
The chart, each person's page and a name search, all on a phone; and your family can make a typeset PDF of the whole genealogy.

How to use
- Choose a genealogyOn the home page, find a genealogy by surname and place, or browse the directory by region or by surname. Its page gives an overview, an introduction, the origin of each branch and the generation characters; a genealogy transcribed from a book also lists the book's known printing errors.
- Search a nameOn the genealogy page, type a name, courtesy name or art name. Simplified and traditional characters both match, and so do pinyin and its initials. Results show generation, father and grandfather, so namesakes can be told apart. To look across genealogies, first find them from the home page: when 25 or fewer are found, you can search their people together.
- Read a personA person's page shows the line of descent from the founding ancestor, parents, children and spouses; for a genealogy transcribed from a book, also the book's variant spellings and the source page (both the PDF page and the printed page), so every record can be checked against the book.
- Explore the lineage viewOpen "Lineage view" to unfold the tree generation by generation: + opens the next generation; a name draws the chart again from that person, showing only their branch; the ▾ beside a name opens a menu with the person's own page.
- Download a PDFThose who may edit a genealogy - its administrators and family members with edit access - can export it: three layouts (classic, outline, index), ten covers, the whole book or a single branch.
- Add and correctA genealogy's administrators, its approved family members and - where the genealogy allows it - anyone who entered its family code can use "Propose a correction", "Add a child" and "Add spouse" on a person's page, stating their evidence. Depending on the genealogy's policy the change applies at once or goes to its administrators for review.
Each of these is shown step by step, with pictures, in the guides; genealogy administrators also have a review queue and a "Correct father" tool, see the FAQ below.
What is a zupu?
A zupu (族谱, also called jiapu 家谱 or zongpu 宗谱) is a clan's register of descent. Starting from the founding ancestor it records, generation by generation, each person's name, father, birth order, spouse and whether the line continued, often with courtesy names, migrations and adoptions between branches. A genealogy is usually compiled for one family (or one branch of it), and families of the same surname are often unrelated, so every genealogy on this site stands on its own and is told apart by surname and ancestral place.
Many people want to know where their family comes from, which generation they belong to and who their ancestors were - whether they live in their home county, elsewhere in China or abroad. The genealogy is that thread. This site lets families from every region keep theirs online, read it together, complete it together, and add the generations born since.
How to read a page
Traditional charts are vertical: names run top to bottom, branches right to left, one row per generation, with the margin naming the generation ("18th generation", "27th transmission") and its generation character. Lines join father to son; when a chart overflows, "接下页" marks that it continues on the next page. Where the same person is redrawn on another page, the site has merged the copies into one record and lists each page's spelling.
Common terms
| 世 shì | Generation. The founding ancestor is generation 1, his sons generation 2, and so on. |
| 传 chuán | "Transmission": some books count generations a second time from a more distant ancestor, so "18th generation" may also be "27th transmission". |
| 行辈字 / 字辈 | Generation character: one character shared by a whole generation (e.g. 崇, 必, 良), set by a generation poem and placed first or second in the given name. Modern names often no longer follow it. |
| 字, 号 | Courtesy name and art name, taken in adulthood. Searching either also finds the person. |
| 长子, 次子… | Birth order among brothers: eldest son, second son… |
| (X妻)(X夫) | Spouse: "wife X" / "husband X". On this site a daughter's husband and her children can be recorded too. |
| (女) | A daughter. |
| 无传 | No recorded descendants. |
| 出继, 入继 | Adoption between branches: a son given to another branch as its heir, marked 出继 in the branch he was born into and 入继 in the branch that took him. The book often records it in only one of the two. |
| 房 | A branch of the clan, usually named after an ancestor. |
| 接下页 / 接上页 | Continued on the next page / from the previous page. |
FAQ
Do I need an account to read?
Not to log in, but to have access. To protect privacy, names are hidden from the public by default and people's pages do not open; where a genealogy's administrators have chosen to show names, the public can read its earlier generations, and the recent generations stay hidden. Entering the family code, or logging in as one of the genealogy's administrators or approved family members, shows everyone. Downloading the PDF or the lineage image needs edit access as well.
Why must I pick a genealogy before searching a name?
Each genealogy is independent and names repeat constantly, so a search only makes sense within a family. If you are not sure which genealogy, find genealogies by surname and place first: when 25 or fewer are found, you can search their people together.
Several people have the same name. How do I tell them apart?
Every person is a separate record; namesakes with different fathers are different people. Results show generation, father and source page, and the person's page shows the full line of descent. Check those.
I typed simplified characters and found nothing. Should I use traditional?
Either works. The book's own spelling is kept as printed (some names really do use traditional characters), and a search matches both forms.
Is there a simplified / traditional converter?
Yes. "Tools" in the top bar has a converter that turns whole passages between simplified and traditional characters, phrase by phrase (so 头发 and 皇后 come out right), with Hong Kong or Taiwan variants. Searching itself needs no conversion.
I found an error. What do I do?
Click "Propose a correction" on the person's page and enter the correct value and your evidence (family records, an elder's account). You need to be one of the genealogy's administrators or approved family members, or to have its family code where it allows corrections by code. Depending on the genealogy's policy the change applies immediately or waits for a genealogy administrator. Deleting a person needs an account and by default an administrator's review; the family code can never delete anyone.
Someone is linked to the wrong father. How is that fixed?
In "Propose a correction", pick the right father (or mother) from the list of the previous generation; each entry shows the person's own father and page so namesakes can be told apart. A genealogy administrator can instead use the "Correct father" box on the person's page: search and set it - at once, while "An administrator's own changes take effect immediately" is ticked.
Do corrections overwrite the book?
No. A correction is recorded beside what was transcribed from the book. The page shows the corrected value with a note "the book prints …", and every record cites its PDF page and printed page so it can be checked at any time.
Which genealogies can I edit?
Genealogies you created or are an administrator of; those you have joined with edit access (an account may join several, up to a number the site sets); and any that allows corrections by code, if you have its code. To join a genealogy, click "Apply to join this genealogy" on its front page and say why you belong; its own administrators decide, and whether you may view only or edit.
How do I add a newborn or a new member?
On the father's (or mother's) page click "Add a child"; the generation is set automatically from the parent. Daughters, their spouses and their children can be recorded too.
What is the edit policy?
Under "Edit policy" on the Genealogy admin page, administrators sort other people's changes into five kinds - additions, corrections, removals, biographies and other - and set each to need review or apply automatically; by default all need review. With "An administrator's own changes take effect immediately" ticked, an administrator's own additions and corrections apply at once; removals still follow the removals row.
How do I start a genealogy for my family?
Press "Start a genealogy" on the home page and a wizard takes you through it: an account; the surname and the ancestral place, chosen down to the county from the list of China's administrative divisions, with the township, village and hall name if you like; the founder; and the family code and an invitation for your relatives. The genealogy's code is made from the place and the surname, is part of its address and never changes; the name and the place can be edited later under "Genealogy settings". The page says how many genealogies your account may make. A new genealogy opens for anyone with its address; to be listed in the directory it needs this site's approval. Its creator is its administrator. With pictures: Make a genealogy in minutes.
How do we build it together as a family?
Under "Access code" on the Genealogy admin page, set the family code, tick "Allow additions and corrections by code" (a new genealogy has it ticked already), press "Copy the invitation" and paste it into your family's group chat. Relatives open the link, enter the code and - with no account - can add newborns, fill in details and correct mistakes; each change waits for your approval. With pictures: Build it together as a family.
Who are genealogy administrators?
The genealogy's creator, plus the family members the creator makes administrators under "Accounts" on the Genealogy admin page (a system administrator can appoint them too). They review pending edits, set the edit policy, and can correct fathers and other details directly.
What PDF styles are there?
Three layouts: classic (vertical, right to left, like the printed book), outline (horizontal, one person per line) and index (a table by generation); ten covers, traditional (vermilion, ink, jade, porcelain blue, vermilion rules, thread-bound) and modern (navy quarter, gold brocade, colour block, vermilion flat — three of which can carry your own photograph); eight sheet sizes, including the 16K, 8K and 32K a Chinese print shop quotes. You can export the whole genealogy or a single branch.
What do "needs review" and "unverified" mean?
"Needs review": the handwriting or the connecting line at that spot in the book was not clear enough when it was transcribed. The data follows the book as closely as possible, but please check it against the page. "Unverified": this person's father was inferred and has not yet been confirmed. Propose a correction if either is wrong.
What about printing errors in the book itself?
The data keeps what is printed, unchanged. The "Errata" section on the genealogy page lists the known errors and what they should read.
Which languages are available?
Simplified Chinese by default, Traditional Chinese under /zh-hant/ and English under /en/; switch at the top right of any page. Personal names are always shown as the book prints them, never converted; a search finds them whether you type simplified, traditional or a mixture. More languages can be added.
