万俟原是鲜卑人的一个部落名称，后来成为姓氏。五胡乱华时期，鲜卑人南下进入中原，部分族人以部落名为姓。[2]

后来，许多万俟姓人逐渐汉化，改用「万」或「莫」作为姓氏。[2]
