一说认为广姓出自上古黄帝时的广成子，其后人以其名为姓。此说属于传说。[2]
另一说则较为晚近：清代乾隆、嘉庆年间，曾任甘肃、湖南地方官的满族人广源，据称是这一姓的始祖，其后人遂以广为姓。[2]
