关于操姓的来源，有几种说法。一说出自曹操的后裔，但据报道，复旦大学的研究认为操姓与曹操没有关系。[1] 一说出自姬姓，为周武王的后裔，以技艺为姓。[1] 另一说法认为，商王盘庚时，一位大臣所任的官职经君主赐姓而成为姓氏。[1]
