红姓有两说。一说出自芈姓。西周时，楚国熊渠的长子熊挚字红，其后人以祖父之字为姓。[2]

另一说源出刘姓。据《通志·氏族略》，汉代楚元王刘交之子刘富受封于红地，其后以国名为姓。[2][3]
