Taizong, the Emperor of Divine Achievement, Sage Virtue, Culture and Martial Prowess, was named Jiong. His first name was Kuangyi; it was changed by bestowal to Guangyi, and in the second year after he took the throne it was changed to his present name. He was the third son of Xuanzu, and his mother was Empress Zhaoxian, of the Du family. Earlier, the empress dreamed that a divine being held up the sun and gave it to her; soon afterwards she became pregnant, and she gave birth to the emperor in the official residence at Junyi. That night a red light rose upward like fire, and people in the lanes and alleys smelled an unusual fragrance. It was the seventh day of the tenth month of the fourth year of Tianfu of the Jin, the day jiachen. Edit
As a child the emperor was unlike others, and when he played with other children they all held him in awe and obeyed him. When he grew up, he had a high-bridged nose and a dragon's countenance, and anyone who saw him knew he was a great man, so dignified was he. He loved learning by nature. When Xuanzu commanded troops in Huainan and took prefectures and counties, he took none of the wealth for himself but sought only old books to give to the emperor, constantly urging and encouraging him; because of this the emperor became skilled in letters and learning and accomplished in many arts. Edit
He served the Zhou and rose to Chief of the Palace Attendants. When Taizu took the throne, he made the emperor Chief Inspector of the Palace Command and titular Defence Commissioner of Mu Prefecture. When Taizu went in person to campaign against Ze and Lu, the emperor stayed behind to guard the capital as Inspector of the Palace, and soon he was made titular Military Commissioner of the Taining Army. During the campaign against Li Chongjin he was Chief Administrator of the Palace, and was given the additional titles of Joint Manager of Affairs with the Secretariat-Chancellery and Governor of Kaifeng, and later also that of Secretariat Director. During the campaign against Taiyuan he was made Regent of the Eastern Capital, was granted halberds for his gate as a special favour, and was enfeoffed as Prince of Jin, ranking above the chief ministers at court. Edit
Ninth year of Kaibao (976)
In the ninth year of Kaibao, in the winter, the tenth month, on guichou, Taizu died, and the emperor thereupon took the imperial throne. On yimao, there was a general amnesty, and even those whom ordinary amnesties did not pardon were all pardoned. On bingchen, the ministers submitted a memorial asking him to take up the affairs of government, and he did not consent; on dingsi, when the chief minister Xue Juzheng and others pressed their request, he consented, and that same day moved to the Changchun Hall. On gengshen, his younger brother Tingmei was made Governor of Kaifeng and Secretariat Director and enfeoffed as Prince of Qi; the late emperor's son Dezhao was made Military Commissioner of the Yongxing Army and Chancellery Director and enfeoffed as Prince of Wugong Commandery; and Defang was made Military Commissioner of Shannan West Circuit, Governor of Xingyuan and Joint Manager of Affairs with the Secretariat-Chancellery. Chu Zhaofu was made Commissioner of the Bureau of Military Affairs and Pan Mei Commissioner of the Southern Bureau of Palace Affairs, and officials at court and in the provinces were advanced in rank according to grade. An edict ordered that the tea, salt and wine monopolies follow the quotas of the eighth year of Kaibao. Edit
In the eleventh month, on the first day, guihai, the emperor did not hold court. On jiazi, the late lady of the Yin family was posthumously invested as Empress Shude, and the Lady of the State of Yue, of the Fu family, as Empress Yide. On wuchen, the households assigned to serve prefectural and county officials were abolished. On gengwu, an edict ordered the Fiscal Commissioners of the circuits to examine the ability of prefectural and county officials, rank them in three grades, and report at the end of the year.

Appraisal
The Appraisal says: The emperor was deep in his plans and bold in decision, and was stirred by the ambition to subdue and pacify the whole realm. Once he had ascended the throne, Chen Hongjin and Qian Chu one after the other surrendered their lands. Before long he took Taiyuan and attacked the Khitan, and after that came the wars with Jiao Prefecture and the Western Xia. The fighting never ceased and natural disasters were rife, and captives and severed ears came in daily, yet the people did not feel the war; floods, droughts, borers and locusts spread over almost the whole realm, yet the people did not think of revolt. Why was this? The emperor treasured kindness and frugality. He wore clothes that had been washed again and again, destroyed curious and ingenious objects, refused the gift of female musicians, and came to see the wrong in hunting excursions. He shut out rarities from afar, held back reports of auspicious omens, cared for the work of farming and examined the results of government. He studied in order to learn widely, did not punish the wild and contrary so as to encourage those who would admonish him, was compassionate and full of pity, and spurred himself to diligence, forgetting to eat until late in the day. He even wished to burn himself to answer Heaven's rebuke, and wished to remit all the taxes of the empire to ease the burden on the people; and in the end the result was that the five weapons were not put to use and good harvests came one after another. So it was that the white-haired elders of Qing and Qi, wishing to lead their sons and younger brothers in repairing the roads and to ask him to ascend the mountain for the feng and shan sacrifices, came one after another. The gentleman says, "He who wins the common people becomes Son of Heaven": does this not describe the emperor? Thus the emperor's achievements and virtue shine in the historical records, and he is called a worthy ruler. But as for changing the reign title before a year had passed after Taizu's death, the demotion and death of the Duke of Fuling County, the suicide of the Prince of Wugong, and the failure to mourn Empress Song with full rites, later ages cannot but criticise these.
